FDC: Visitor Contraband Interdiction | February 5 – February 11, 2019

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida Department of Corrections (FDC) has zero tolerance for contraband of any kind, and visitors attempting to introduce contraband are subject to immediate termination of their visitation privileges.

Whenever contraband is recovered on a visitor, local law enforcement is contacted, and they determine whether to make an arrest.

Avon Park Correctional Institution: On February 9, staff discovered an unsecured vehicle. Inside the vehicle, staff observed prohibited items consisting of various work tools. Since the vehicle could not lock, the items could not be properly secured. The owner’s visitation was terminated.

Avon Park Work Camp: On February 9, a visitor was found to be in possession of various prescription medications in an unlabeled container. Their visitation was terminated.

Baker Correctional Institution: On February 10, the institution’s K-9 team alerted on three visitor vehicles. In the first vehicle, staff discovered prohibited contraband. The owner’s visitation was terminated. In the second vehicle, staff discovered narcotics. The owner was arrested for possession of a controlled substance. In the third vehicle, staff discovered marijuana, ammunition and illegal firearms. The owner was arrested for felony possession of a firearm and possession of a controlled substance.

Cross City Correctional Institution: On February 10, the institution’s K-9 team alerted on two visitor vehicles. Staff discovered narcotics inside of each vehicle. Both owners were arrested for possession of narcotics.

Desoto Work Camp: On February 10, the institution’s K-9 team alerted on a visitor’s vehicle. Staff discovered marijuana inside the vehicle. Their visitation was terminated.

Liberty Correctional Institution: On February 10, the institution’s K-9 team alerted on two visitor vehicles. Staff discovered marijuana inside each vehicle. Both visitations were terminated.

Polk Correctional Institution: On February 9, the institution’s K-9 team alerted on a vehicle shared by three visitors. Staff discovered marijuana inside the vehicle. Their visitation was terminated.

Putnam Correctional Institution: On February 9, the institution’s K-9 team alerted on three visitor vehicles. Staff discovered marijuana inside each vehicle. One vehicle also contained paraphernalia. Their visitations were terminated.

Reception and Medical Center – West: On February 9, the institution’s K-9 team alerted on two visitor vehicles. Staff discovered marijuana inside each vehicle. One vehicle also contained narcotics. Both visitations were terminated.

South Florida Reception Center – South: On February 9, the institution’s K-9 team alerted a visitor’s vehicle. Staff discovered marijuana inside the vehicle. Their visitation was terminated.

South Florida Reception Center: On February 10, the institution’s K-9 team alerted on two visitor vehicles. Staff discovered marijuana inside each vehicle. Both visitations were terminated.
