Visitor Contraband Interdiction | January 2, – January 7, 2019
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida Department of Corrections (FDC) has zero tolerance for contraband of any kind, and visitors attempting to introduce contraband are subject to immediate termination of their visitation privileges.
Whenever contraband is recovered on a visitor, local law enforcement is contacted, and they determine whether to make an arrest.
This past weekend, institutional staff stopped seventeen visitors from introducing contraband into FDC’s secure facilities:
Baker Correctional Institution: On January 6, the institution’s K-9 team alerted on five visitor vehicles. In four of the vehicles, staff discovered marijuana. In the fifth vehicle, staff discovered packaged contraband including cell phones and tobacco. All five visitations were terminated.
Charlotte Correctional Institution: On January 6, the institution’s K-9 team alerted on two visitor vehicles. Staff subsequently discovered marijuana inside each vehicle. Their visitations were terminated.
Columbia Correctional Institution: On January 6, the institution’s K-9 team alerted on a visitor’s vehicle. Staff discovered narcotics inside the vehicle. The visitor was arrested for possession.
Cross City Correctional Institution: On January 6, the institution’s K-9 team alerted on a visitor’s vehicle. Staff subsequently discovered marijuana inside the vehicle. The visitor was arrested for introduction of contraband.
Cross City Correctional Institution East: On January 6, the institution’s K-9 team alerted on two visitor vehicles. Staff subsequently discovered marijuana inside each vehicle. Their visitations were terminated.
Desoto Annex: On January 5, the institution’s K-9 team alerted on a visitor’s vehicle. The visitor refused consent to search the vehicle. Their visitation was terminated.
Hernando Correctional Institution: On January 6, the institution’s K-9 team alerted on a visitor’s vehicle. Staff discovered narcotics inside the vehicle. The visitor was issued a notice to appear for possession.
Martin Correctional Institution: On January 6, staff observed a visitor engaged in suspicious activity. A pat search was conducted, and staff discovered the visitor to be in possession of marijuana and narcotics. During a subsequent search of their vehicle, staff discovered additional narcotics. The visitor was arrested for possession and introduction of contraband.
Moore Haven Correctional Facility: On January 5, the institution’s K-9 team alerted on a visitor’s vehicle. The visitor refused consent to search the vehicle. Their visitation was terminated.
Taylor Annex: On January 5, during a pat search, staff discovered a visitor to be in possession of a concealed cell phone. The visitor was arrested for introduction of contraband.
Zephyrhills Correctional Institution: On January 6, the institution’s K-9 team alerted on a visitor’s vehicle. The visitor refused consent to search the vehicle. Their visitation was terminated.
