FDC’s Office of Inspector General investigates, arrests both inmates for separate attacks

TALLAHASSEE, Fla — Two Florida Department of Corrections (FDC) Correctional Officers have recently been physically attacked while on duty. Both incidents resulted in the swift arrest of the attackers by the FDC Office of the Inspector General (OIG).

On August 20, at Gulf CI in Wewahitchka, Inmate Christopher Brown (DC# X81184) attacked an officer, who sustained injuries as a result. The incident was brought under control by additional officers who responded to assist.

“Our officers go willingly into harm’s way in order to uphold our mission of public safety. I commend the courage and fortitude displayed by these officers during and after these senseless attacks,” Secretary Mark Inch said. “I want to express my upmost appreciation for the quick and diligent action taken by the Inspector General in these arrests.”

The FDC Office of Inspector General conducted a comprehensive criminal investigation into both incidents. Inmate Brown was arrested on charges of Battery on a Law Enforcement Officer. Inmate Shannon was arrested on charges of Attempted Murder and Possession of Contraband.

Both inmates were transferred to county jails. The FDC OIG would like to recognize the assistance provided by Gulf County Sheriff Mike Harrison and Jackson County Sheriff Lou Roberts and their offices for the transportation and booking of these inmates.

The OIG would also like to recognize Florida State Attorney Glenn Hess of the 14th Judicial Circuit, for his overwhelming assistance and cooperation.
