Two FDC Correctional Officers Assaulted at Wakulla CI Annex

Officers injured while responding to an inmate-on-inmate altercation

WAKULLA, Fla. — Two Florida Department of Corrections (FDC) Officers were injured yesterday during their response to an inmate-on-inmate altercation. At approximately 7:00 p.m. at Wakulla Correctional Institution Annex, during a verbal altercation between inmates, one correctional officer was struck and sustained injuries during his attempt to de-escalate the situation. A second responding officer was subsequently attacked.

Secretary Mark Inch said, “We commend these two officers for their perseverance and bravery yesterday. Although injured, they maintained control and secured the inmates until more assistance arrived. Our officers come to work every day to protect Florida communities and serve courageously in this profession dedicated to public service. We stand behind these officers and pray for a swift and complete recovery.”

FDC officers were transported to an area hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. One officer remains hospitalized in stable condition. Involved inmates have been transferred to another facility and face disciplinary action including possible criminal charges.

The FDC Office of Inspector General is conducting an investigation into the incident and further details are not releasable at this time. When the report is complete, it will be made available to the public.
