Tallahassee, Fla. – Today, Florida Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried issued a statement following the executive actions, including pardoning all prior federal offenses of simple marijuana possession, taken by President Biden.

“Today is extraordinary step forward in the name of justice for the victims of unjust sentencing whose lives have been upended or even destroyed.

“When I ran for this office in 2018, the executive actions we are seeing today from President Biden were at the heart of my campaign. This is what I have worked for every day as Florida’s Commissioner of Agriculture. It is what I called for in my 2021 Federal Partnership Plan. It is, in large part, the reason I filed a federal lawsuit fighting discrimination against medical marijuana users.

“The president is doing the right thing ordering a review of the classification of marijuana, and I am pleased to see that this will be an expedited process. President Biden also called on governors to pardon simple state marijuana possession offenses. I add my voice to his call and strongly urge Governor DeSantis to do exactly that. I will also be asking that this issue be included on our next Clemency Board agenda.

“The people of Florida know I have long been an advocate for medical marijuana, for the hemp industry, and for a complete overhaul of antiquated, unjust marijuana policy as it relates to our criminal justice system. Today is a victory, and we owe you our gratitude for responding to our calls for justice, President Biden.”
