Tallahassee, Fla. – Today, First Lady Casey DeSantis announced contemporary artist, Orestes Bouzon as Florida’s featured artist for Hispanic Heritage Month celebrated September 15 to October 15. Mr. Bouzon, who fled Cuba in 1994 to come to the United States, has made a name for himself and his art across the globe ever since.
“I am delighted to announce world-renowned artist, Mr. Orestes Bouzon as Florida’s featured artist for the 2020 Hispanic Heritage Month,” said First Lady Casey DeSantis. “His story, like so many others, is one of hardship and hard work. After fleeing Cuba in 1994, Mr. Bouzon set out for a better life in the United States and began working as an artist for the Marine Corps at Guantanamo Bay. Mr. Bouzon’s untold story is one that I am excited to celebrate, along with his art, during this year’s Hispanic Heritage Month.”
About Orestes Bouzon
Orestes Bouzon is a contemporary artist who was born in Havana, Cuba in 1963. Bouzon has been an established artist in the United States since 1995.
Bouzon enjoys using a figurative style to create magical realism in his paintings. He often uses the female figure combined with other elements and vibrant colors to capture light, making his painting extraordinary.
As the artist explains, “my paintings emphasize the female form – my muse. She is confident yet serine; unique and yet every woman. I am captivated by the romantic fabric of days gone by, and adorn my muse in swirls of rich color and light.”
As a master of the veladura technique, Bouzon graduated from the prestigious San Alejandro Academy of Art. After graduating, Bouzon decided to flee the oppression of his native country in 1994. His journey led him to the United States Naval Base, Guantanamo Bay. During his 14-month stay, Bouzon dedicated his time to painting for the Marines in exchange for art supplies.
Bouzon’s artwork has been exhibited in galleries and museums both internationally and in the United States. He has won numerous awards and recognitions for his work. In 2005, he represented the United States at the V Biennial in Florence, Italy receiving the Lorenzo the Magnificent Award with the exhibition work entitled “Your Majestic Azure.”
Orestes currently lives and continues his artistic work in Miami, Florida. His most recent work in collaboration are based on the series “Carnavale” by Bouzon – Muxo.
