ORLANDO, Fla. – Agents with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement today arrested Jeffrey Hunter, 59, of DeLand on a charge of sale or delivery of hydrocodone. Hunter is a DeLand City Commissioner.

The investigation was launched after the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office (VCSO) asked FDLE to look into allegations Hunter was trafficking narcotics. The VCSO learned Hunter may be involved with drugs while investigating a complaint that he was a victim of fraud and extortion. Hunter told detectives his former girlfriend and her boyfriend, Jose Santiago, were blackmailing him. Santiago was arrested and charged with extortion.

FDLE’s investigation began in February 2018. During the course of the investigation, agents determined Hunter had given his former girlfriend hydrocodone pills on at least seven separate occasions. It was also learned that Hunter left several voicemails on his former girlfriend’s phone in which he talked about the amount of pain pills he legally had available.

Hunter was booked in the Volusia County Jail on a $25,000 bond. The VCSO assisted with the investigation. The State Attorney’s Office, 7th Circuit, will prosecute.
