News Release (January 16, 2018)

Major David Harper of the Madison County Sheriff’s Office reports that on Thursday, January 11, 2018, at 11:41 p. m., a deputy was dispatched to a hunting camp located on SW Candler Street located in southern Madison County to investigate a reported Burglary. Upon arrival the deputy made contact with the victims who reported that residence along with several other structures on the property had been broken into. The victims further stated that while checking the perimeter of the property they located three large plastic totes concealed in the woods near the road. The totes were covered with camouflage clothing and limbs in attempt to conceal them. The victims inspected the inside of the totes and located property that belonged to them. After removing their property the victims decided to leave the totes in place and install a game camera with hopes to obtain photographs of whomever returned to collect the totes.

On Friday morning, January 12, 2018, at 8:55 A.M., the Madison County Communications Center received a 911 call from the same victims reporting that they caught a white male attempting to recover the totes and was holding him at gun point. Multiple deputies were dispatched to the location. The suspect (identified as Anthony Todd Morgan) heard the approaching sirens and fled on foot. The first arriving deputy observed Morgan running toward the woods and exited his patrol vehicle to give chase. Other responding deputies including a canine established a perimeter. Morgan realized that a canine was on scene and immediately surrendered. Deputies were able to take Morgan into custody without further incident.
