Visitor Contraband Interdiction | January 7 – January 14, 2019

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida Department of Corrections (FDC) has zero tolerance for contraband of any kind, and visitors attempting to introduce contraband are subject to immediate termination of their visitation privileges.

Whenever contraband is recovered on a visitor, local law enforcement is contacted, and they determine whether to make an arrest.

This past weekend, institutional staff stopped nineteen visitors from introducing contraband into FDC’s secure facilities:

Avon Park Correctional Institution: On January 12, the institution’s K-9 team alerted on a visitor’s vehicle. Staff discovered marijuana inside the vehicle. Their visitation was terminated.

Hamilton Annex: On January 13, the institution’s K-9 team alerted on two separate visitor vehicles.

In the first vehicle, staff discovered multiple cell phones and synthetic marijuana. The visitor was arrested.

Law enforcement officers on scene searched the second vehicle and discovered marijuana, various narcotics, and paraphernalia inside the vehicle. The visitor was arrested for introduction of contraband, trafficking narcotics, possession of marijuana and possession of paraphernalia.

Hardee Correctional Institution: On January 13, the institution’s K-9 team alerted on a visitor’s vehicle. Staff discovered marijuana inside the vehicle. Their visitation was terminated.

During a pat search of another visitor, staff discovered marijuana. The visitor was arrested for possession and introduction of contraband.

Lowell Annex: On January 12, the institution’s K-9 team alerted on a vehicle shared by two visitors. Staff discovered marijuana inside the vehicle. Their visitations were terminated.

Madison Work Camp: On January 12, the institution’s K-9 team alerted on three separate visitor vehicles.

In the first two vehicles, staff discovered marijuana. The occupants’ visitations were terminated.

In the third vehicle, shared by two visitors, staff discovered marijuana. Both were arrested for possession.

Okeechobee Correctional Institution: On January 13, the institution’s K-9 team alerted on a vehicle shared by two visitors. Staff discovered marijuana inside the vehicle. Their visitations were terminated.

South Florida Reception Center: On January 12, the institution’s K-9 team alerted on a visitor’s vehicle. The visitor refused consent to search the vehicle. Their visitation was terminated.

Santa Rosa Annex: On January 12, the institution’s K-9 team alerted on two separate visitor vehicles. Both visitors refused consent to search the vehicle. Their visitations were terminated.

Suwannee Work Camp: On January 12, the institution’s K-9 team alerted on a visitor’s vehicle. Staff discovered marijuana, narcotics, paraphernalia, alcohol and a firearm inside the vehicle. The visitor was arrested for possession of narcotics, possession of paraphernalia and possession of a firearm on institutional grounds.
