Today at Taylor County Middle School, Taylor County School Resource Deputy Michelle Sumrall received information that a middle school student was possibly in possession of a handgun.
SRD Sumrall immediately made contact with the 14-year-old student, a recent transfer from outside of our district. An unloaded Glock .40 caliber handgun, which had been previously reported stolen, was found in the possession of the student. The student was placed under arrest, and the family of the student was contacted.
Sheriff Wayne Padgett and Superintendent of Schools Dr. Danny Glover have strongly advocated the necessity of training and preparedness for the safety of our children.
Today, as a result of her training, SRD Sumrall was able to resolve this incident quickly and safely.
Sheriff Padgett would like to personally commend the person(s) who came forward with the information.
