News Release (May 28, 2019)

Madison County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Epp Richardson reports that on the 23rd day of May 2019 Deputy Ben Pike, while assigned to Pinetta Elementary School, observed a white male attempt to enter the school grounds through an unapproved area. Deputy Pike confronted the subject, later identified as Brian Wayne Brown, and advised him that he could not enter school grounds from that location. Brown explained that he was there to pick up his step-son.

While speaking with Brown, Deputy Pike noticed that Brown was slurring his words and staggering around and the strong odor of burnt marijuana was emitting from his person. Deputy Pike further observed that there was a prescription bottle with a ripped off label sticking out of the top pocket of Browns overalls. Deputy Pike questioned Brown about the contents of the bottle as Brown handed Deputy Pike the bottle which contained approximately 1 gram of green marijuana.

Brown further provided Deputy Pike a separate bottle containing approximately 6 grams of marijuana concentrate, a glass marijuana pipe, and a prescription bottle containing 20 grams (31 pills) prescribed to a different subject. Brown was secured as Deputy Pike continued his investigation into the vehicle that Brown arrived in.

Deputy Pike confronted the driver of the vehicle that was parked directly in front of the school flag pole. As Deputy Pike approached the driver’s window, he noticed the smell of burnt marijuana emitting from the vehicle. Deputy Pike questioned the driver, later identified as Mr. Jeffery Ryan Simmons, concerning there being any illegal substances located inside of the vehicle as to which Simmons denied.

Deputy Pike conducted an Officer Safety pat down and discovered a syringe in his front left pocket. Simmons was secured as a search of the vehicle was conducted. The search of Simmons 2010 Mazda four door revealed a small plastic bag containing approximately 2 grams of methamphetamine in the middle console and two additional syringes.

Both Simmons and Brown were placed under arrest, served with trespass warnings for the Pinetta Elementary School and transported to the Madison County Jail without further incident.
