Inmates Assault Officer at Mayo Correctional Institution Annex

MAYO, Fla. — On June 26, two inmates assaulted a correctional officer at Mayo Correctional Institution Annex.

Using improvised weapons, the inmates inflicted serious injuries to the officer. Additional security staff immediately responded, and the inmates were subdued.

Our officer was examined and treated by medical staff and transported to an area hospital for additional treatment of his injuries. He has since been released from the hospital.

The FDLE and The Department’s Office of Inspector General is conducting an investigation and the Office of Intelligence is reviewing the incident to determine necessary action.

Secretary Mark Inch said, “We are grateful our officer is expected to make a full recovery. He showed extraordinary courage and his teammates are to be commended for their quick response. We appreciate our correctional officers who serve in this often-overlooked profession dedicated to public safety.”
