Inmate Arrested for Assaulting Officers at Okaloosa Correctional Institution

CRESTVIEW, Fla. – On May 29, the Florida Department of Corrections’ Office of the Inspector General (OIG) arrested Inmate Ricardo Bryan (L00414) at Okaloosa Correctional Institution. Inmate Bryan has been charged with four counts of battery of a law enforcement officer and one count of depriving an officer of means of protection.

Secretary Julie Jones said, “The Department commends the officers involved in yesterday’s attack for their courage in the line of duty. I am thankful for the quick response by staff to stop this inmate and to our Office of the Inspector General and law enforcement partners for making his immediate arrest.”

Inmate Bryan assaulted the officers Tuesday morning at approximately 8:20 a.m. Inmate Bryan tackled one officer to the ground and proceeded to spray responding officers with a canister of pepper spray. Staff responded appropriately, and the inmate was subdued. Medical staff examined the officers and noted injuries.

Following the arrest, Inmate Bryan was transported to the Okaloosa County Jail for booking. The OIG acknowledges the cooperation and assistance provided by the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office and the State Attorney’s Office in the 1st Judicial Circuit.
