Tallahassee, Fla. — As the Florida Legislature begins its special session on Wednesday, gubernatorial candidate Gwen Graham is demanding Republican leadership end their backroom deals, division, and dysfunction.

“After almost 20 years of one-party rule in Tallahassee, today’s Republican leaders are even worse than their party’s predecessors. They made a secret backroom deal, now they can’t even agree on the secret deal they made, and they’re costing taxpayers with a chaotic special session filled with dysfunction devoid of any leadership,” Graham said. “This is what happens when you strike secret deals that only help special interests. When I’m governor, the days of governing in the shadows and striking backroom deals will be over.”

Following Rick Scott’s call for a special session, Graham immediately slammed it as another shell game to divert funds from our public schools.

“If Rick Scott was engaged and the legislature had worked in the sunshine, we wouldn’t be in this position. As governor, I will work with the legislature at every step of the way to craft an education policy that supports our public schools and students, and I will end the legislature’s secret backroom deals,” Graham said.

Graham also repeated her call for Rick Scott to veto HB 7069 and for the legislature to focus on bipartisan solutions Florida voters support.

“Their education plan is a gift to Betsy DeVos and the education industry —not our public school system. It will result in cuts and layoffs which will directly impact Florida students — especially those at schools like Miami Carol City Senior High, where I performed a Workday last month.” Graham said. “Tallahassee politicians should stop playing games and listen to voters. Instead of robbing our schools and focusing on issues that divide us, they should fully fund Florida Forever and implement medical marijuana.”
