TAMPA, Fla. – Today, during a meeting of the Florida Cabinet at the Florida State Fair, Governor Rick Scott recognized Pinellas County Sheriff’s Deputy Damon Laney with the Governor’s Medal of Heroism for his swift actions to save a woman’s life.

Governor Scott said, “Today is ‘Salute to Heroes Day’ at the Florida State Fair, and I’m proud to recognize a true law enforcement hero, Deputy Damon Laney. His actions and dedication to serving his community are an example of the incredible work law enforcement officers do to keep Florida families safe.”

About the Medal of Heroism Recipient

On January 2, 2018, Pinellas County Sheriff’s Deputy Damon Laney was driving to an off-duty assignment when he saw a car stopped with its hazard lights blinking along the side of the Sunshine Skyway Bridge. As Deputy Laney pulled behind the vehicle to assist, a woman ran from the car toward the barrier wall of the bridge. Deputy Laney quickly positioned his car to prevent her from jumping over the bridge wall, saving her life. He then ran from his car to successfully restrain her safely and without harm.
