Four Inmates Sentenced for Assault on Correctional Officers at Santa Rosa CI

MILTON, Fla. — The Florida Department of Corrections’ (FDC) Office of the Inspector General (OIG) announced the sentencing of four inmates for their part in an attack on correctional officers at Santa Rosa Correctional Institution in January. Inmates Andre Williams (L66623), Markus Vincent (B13075), Johnslow Sauveur (B11923), and Dukene Myrtil (M56396) were convicted of battery on a law enforcement officer. Inmate Myrtil was additionally convicted with improper exhibition of a weapon and depriving an officer of means of communication.

Secretary Julie Jones said, “Attacks on our staff are never acceptable, and when they occur, we will always pursue appropriate disciplinary or legal action to the fullest extent. We commend the response of our officers at Santa Rosa to end this incident. We also thank our Office of the Inspector General and our law enforcement partners for their exceptional work in ensuring these inmates were charged and convicted for their actions.”

On January 1, 2018, staff were supervising inmates into their cells when Williams, Vincent, Sauveur, and Myrtil attempted to enter the shower area. When staff began counseling the inmates, they became combative and began attacking the officers in a coordinated manner.

Following the incident, the inmates were immediately arrested and transported to the Santa Rosa County Jail for booking. The OIG acknowledges the cooperation and assistance provided by Prosecutor Amber Rowland and State Attorney William Eddins of the 1st Judicial Circuit of Florida.
