New Visitation Schedule FAQ

Q: When will the new visitation schedule begin?

A: The visitation schedule will not change until after the proposed rule has been adopted. The dates and information regarding any change will be posted on the Department’s website. The current weekend visitation schedule remains in effect at institutions statewide.

Q: What are the hours for visitation?

A: The hours of visitation remain unchanged: 9am-3pm EST (8am-2pm CST)

Q: I heard visitation is getting cut to two (2) hours once a week. Is this true?

A: No. Two (2) hours is the minimum required visitation time allotted in the proposed rule. It is not a time limit. The hours of visitation will remain 9am-3pm EST (8am-2pm CST) unless otherwise noted on the Department website.

Q: I work every other weekend, what if the new visitation schedule falls on the weekends I must work?

A: Requests for special visits will be considered on a case by case basis by the Warden. If your work schedule would consistently affect your visitation weekend, you should address this with the Warden at the facility your visits take place.

Q: I am traveling from out of state, can I visit my loved one the weekend I am in town?

A: Requests for special visits will be considered on a case by case basis by the Warden.

Q: Will the new schedule begin with odd or even numbers?

A: The schedule has not yet been determined. Any change to the current visitation schedule will be posted in advance on our website.

Q: Will visitation be the full weekend?

A: Yes, weekend visitation will be held on Saturdays and Sundays from 9:00 a.m. through 3:00 p.m. EST (8:00 a.m. through 2:00 p.m. CST). Whether visitors will be allowed to visit both days will depend on the final visitation schedule decided upon once the proposed rule is adopted.

Q: What should I do if I go to visitation prior to the rule change and they refuse my visit due to the new visitation schedule?

A: You should ask to speak to the officer in charge (OIC) at the visiting park. If you are unable to resolve the issue, you may contact ask to speak to weekend duty warden.
