TALLAHASSEE, Fla. –National Missing Children’s Day is Wednesday, May 25, 2016. President Ronald Reagan proclaimed May 25 as National Missing Children’s Day in 1983 and the nation observes this day each year to mark the anniversary of the disappearance of Etan Patz from a New York City street on his way to school in 1979.

“I urge parents to take a few minutes tomorrow to talk to your kids about being safe,” said FDLE Commissioner Rick Swearingen. “Websites like Secure Florida.org and Netsmartz.org can help both parents and children learn ways to stay out of danger in addition to offering safety resources.”

During 2015, Florida law enforcement agencies received 34,221 reports of missing children and FDLE’s Missing Persons and Offender Registration unit provided direct assistance in the recovery of 98 missing children last year. Citizens can sign up to receive free AMBER and Missing Child Alerts by email or text message at www.missingchildrenalert.com or like us on Facebook @ https://www.facebook.com/FDLEpage/.

Each year, Florida recognizes the extraordinary efforts made by law enforcement and private citizens on behalf of missing children at the annual Florida Missing Children’s Day ceremony. This year’s ceremony will be held at the Capitol on Sept. 12, 2016.
