Fake warrant scammers impersonate sheriff’s deputies.

Today, citizens reported receiving calls from a person who identified himself as a deputy with the Taylor County Sheriff’s Office. The caller told our citizens a warrant for their arrest had been issued and money was required to avoid jail.

The Taylor County Sheriff’s Office will never call and ask anyone to send money. Always contact our office to verify any suspicious call from our agency at 850-584-4225 or 850-584-2429.

As a reminder, if you receive a phone call or email from someone claiming to be a Sheriff, policeman, a lawyer or bounty hunter, saying they had a warrant for your arrest, verify whom you’re speaking with. The callers, manipulating caller ID to make the number appear to come from our local sheriff’s office or jail, tell potential victims they have an outstanding warrant for an unpaid debt, missed jury duty or some minor infraction and that a fine is due. The callers then convince people to make the payments by wiring it through Western Union MoneyGram or buying a prepaid credit card (like Green Dot) and registering it online.

Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your:
• name,
• date of birth,
• bank account,
• credit card, or
• Social Security number
